McDonald's Removes AI-Generated Festive Advertisement Following Public Outcry.
McDonald's has removed a Christmas advert created using AI after facing considerable online backlash.
The 45-second spot was created using AI-generated video and was initially released online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.
Audience Reaction and Decision to Pull
Soon after it aired, commenters criticized the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several described it as "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This experience serves as an important learning as we explore the proper utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.
The advert was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various things that can go wrong during the holidays, under the slogan "the worst time of the year".
The Trend of AI in Advertising
Campaigns that incorporate generative AI have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among prominent corporations, notably for the holiday campaign season.
- Coca-Cola has similarly launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
- Inherent Limitations: Because clips produced using generative AI are prone to distort the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be only short in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also raised concerns about automation in the advertising sector, with some commenters pointing out it could reduce opportunities for camera crews.
Defense from the Creators
Following the ad being taken down, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.
Bridge claimed, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "in the same way we would on any standard production".
"This wasn't an experiment," she commented. "The result was a proper commercial."
Mixed Public Reception
While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the response for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been divisive.
For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday spot from another major brand reportedly achieved a significant "positive feedback" from the public.
However, several companies have also faced criticism for employing AI in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "lazy" and "uncanny".
The episode highlights the evolving discussion within the advertising and production sectors about the balance between technological innovation and audience reception.
