At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
